The three tiers of care that your typical CCRC provides.

June 15, 2016

http://www.morningstarseniorliving.comPart of the reason why so many people think so poorly of retirement or senior living communities is that they don't really know much about them. People think they are just full of elderly people who sit around and do puzzles all day, watching television to pass the time. This might be the case for some people, but the reality of the matter is that places like CCRCs are truly happening places. At many of them, people play cards, board games, and partake in a variety of activities from dance parties to dinner parties. At MorningStar Senior Living, there are a huge number of options of things for people to do. They'll even load up a bus of people and take them around the city to enjoy some of the food or to go catch a movie.

These places aren't where people go to just pass the time before it's their time. No, they're places where people go so they can socialize with other people their age, engage in fun activities throughout the day, and have some things done for them so they can focus on the things they enjoy. Many people just move into these places to have their food cooked, but they really aren't in need of all that much care.

One of the most common types of senior living communities is a CCRC. This stands for continuing care retirement community, and it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It's where people go at various stages of their life to get some assistance with things while also living with other people around their same age. There are three tiers of care that your typical CCRC provides. Here they are in no particular order.

1. Very little. First off, there are lots of people that first move into a CCRC when they need little to no care at all. They move into these communities so that they are able to take part in the social activities they have to offer, so that they don't have to worry about cooking their food, and so they don't ever have to mow a lawn again. They don't need someone to come help them per se, but they do appreciate not having to do some things from time to time.

2. Moderate care. The second tier of care is moderate care, where the people need more done for them but they still don't need to be cared for around the clock. This generally means that anything needing physical labor is handled for them, but beyond that they're good to go.

3. Intensive care. Lastly, many CCRCs will provide some level of nursing and more intensive care when the time comes for their residents to need it. Not all CCRCs offer this, so look around if this is what you need.

As you can see, the point of a CCRC is to give people a single place that they can live as their needs change. They don't have to move when they pick the right CCRC, but instead they just have to switch their level of care.

The importance of respite care

March 29, 2016

Your parents took care of you for over 18 years.  They diapered you, dressed you, fed you and drove you all over town.  They may have even paid for college and later baby sat for your children when they were young.  They always seemed to be there for you to offer support, encouragement, money and time, as needed.  Now, with either one or both of them experiencing declining health or memory, you feel obliged to return the favor.

Before mom moved in, you did her shopping and you helped her cook and clean.  In addition, you also assisted her on laundry day.  Therefore, it seemed like a no-brainer to move her into your home and have her live with you.  You thought it would make it easier for you because you would not have to drive to her and you would only have one house to clean.

Here it is six months later and you need a break.  You are more than happy to be helping your mother, but you wish you could take some time for you.  You would like to be able to run errands on your own and your husband mentioned a much needed vacation, but you are unsure as to what to do with the woman who gave you life while you go out for a few hours to go grocery shopping or a few days to take a break.

You mention to a friend that mom’s health has declined to the point that you wish you had some help and she mentions something called respite care.  Respite care is assistance that is given to caregivers so that they can have some downtime without the responsibility of taking care of a senior relative.

Respite care can be arranged as companion care in either your home or the home of your relative.  This enables the senior to have some company when you are not allowed.  While this person can assist with everyday activities such as cooking and cleaning, they cannot provide medical assistance beyond dispensing medication.

You can also choose respite care that goes beyond companion care and also offers minor medical assistance in a private home.  However, for both companion care and the hiring of a nursing assistant, you need to go through an agency or do an extensive background and reference check before employing anyone.

Respite care can also be arranged at a senior center or a senior living community.  Both offer social activities for the senior to participate in while they are there being supervised and/or helped by the staff.

Finally, often times you can get respite care by enquiring at an assisted living facility.  This option not only allows the senior to participate in the social activities, it also allows him or her to ascertain whether or not the facility is a good fit.  This is a good option if you are going out of town, as many ALFs will allow your family to stay overnight.  Who knows, when you return, he or she may not want to leave.

The importance of socialization as part of senior living

March 29, 2016

While residents at various different types of senior living communities often reside there because they need assistance with anything from housework to help with medical issues, one of the most important factors when deciding on the right neighborhood is the amount of and types of social activities that are offered.

Socialization becomes increasingly important as a person ages and becomes less able to do the things he or she has always done.  This is because social activities give seniors a sense of purpose.  Socialization has also been known to increase self-esteem and it also improves one’s physical and mental health.  Furthermore, social activities are important because many seniors have gotten to the point where they do not want to go out of their home because it is either too difficult to get where they want to go or significant lifelong friends have health problems or have died.  However, when, social skills are not actively used they can decline.  This can then lead to anxiety when elders do go out among people. Anxiety leads to depression which makes them even more reluctant to be socially active.  Seniors need peers, as well as family.

Whether a senior decides to join a club with those that share the same interest, take an exercise or education class, or volunteer to help others that live in the assisted living facility, he or she will make new friends.  Those involved in social activities have also been known to strengthen their existing relationships when they are engaged in activities they enjoy with others who delight in and share the same interests.

Another side effect that communal activities have been known to have on those that participate is to increase self-esteem.  Members obtain a sense of purpose through the fun activity that gets them up and going each day.  When one feels helpful and needed it can make a huge difference in anyone's life, no matter their age.  People feel better when they have structured activities to be a part of and since senior assisted living residents no longer work, have chores to do, or partake in other tasks that had previously filled the day, it is even more critical that they participate in something constructive and worthwhile.

Furthermore, anything that boosts self-esteem and self-confidence has been known to contribute to a positive mental outlook.  This, in turn, encourages the body to release what is known as "good" hormones.  These health-promoting chemicals assist in the body’s fight against illness and disease.  These “good” hormones also make people feel better, physically.  Additionally, regular interaction and engagement with others helps to keep the mind sharp and decreases depression.

Social activities also allow seniors to create new identities.  As people age, they become more and more limited in what they are able to do independently.  Through an interest or hobby, those in the advanced stage of the aging process are encouraged to do new things within their limitations.  Often times, they discover they are more capable than they previously thought.
